More About Renton
Part of the Seattle metropolitan area, Renton is situated on the southeast shores of Lake Washington. Originally a coal mining town, the city became a major aerospace center when Boeing began building its B-29 Superfortress bombers there in the early 1940s. Renton continues to be one of Boeing's largest manufacturing centers. It's estimated that 40 percent of all commercial aircraft flying today were built in Renton.
Although still anchored in aerospace, Renton has, over the last 20 years, significantly diversified its economy. Several prominent video gaming and social networking companies now call Renton home, and the Federal Reserve Bank recently opened a major facility in the city. Renton has also welcomed several big-box retailers to its commercial mix.
Renton's climate is virtually identical to nearby Seattle's. Summers tend to be temperate, with highs averaging in the mid- to high 70s and occasional heat waves driving highs into the 90s. Winters are cloudy, cool and rainy, with temperatures averaging in the 40s and 50s.
The city is served by the King County Metro and Sound Transit Express bus systems, one of the West Coast's best public transportation networks.
